Camp Hosting in Wyoming (Glenrock, WY)

We moved to Glenrock, WY on 6 May.  Glenrock is just 20 miles east of Casper.  This was our first view of our new home at River Platte RV and Campground.  Sandy wasn't too pleased with what she saw when we pulled in next to the office.  No trees, too much dirt, and very little in business facilities.  

Despite our first impressions, we decided to stay to give it a try.  We found out that this is the first year for this campground to be open and they were still building RV sites.  The pipeline and petroleum business has hit this area and business is booming.  Workers are scrambling to find a place to live near their work and many come with their own rigs.

There were only eight sites with full hook-ups when we pulled in, but the owner was starting work on a new section for another four sites when we showed up.  They are about to open up two more sections for a total of 28 - 30 sites.  All the sites have already been reserved.  Dan has been assisting in opening up new sites with sewer, water, and electrical connections.  The office gets calls everyday from people and companies looking for open sites.

The campground has access to the river which is nice for campground residents to go kayaking, paddle boarding, or just tubing.  We enjoy the walk down to the river and looking for different birds, but we have not been in or on the river.

There are a lot of tent sites available.  Right now, it has been a little slow.  Maybe once summer gets here and stays, the tent sites will start filling up.

In the meantime, the campground is filled with pipeline workers and a few have their families with them.  Needless to say, this is not what we were expecting for a summertime campers.  It is very quiet even on the weekends.

So far, our work has not been what we were expecting either.  Our contract said we would only be working as camp hosts, but that has not been the case.  Our so called part-time work from Thurs-Sun has been all week long with Dan working some long manual labor hours while Sandy is barely needed in the office.  Do we like our new jobs?  Not really, but we will probably honor our contract and stay for the agreed time.  Then again, since the contract did not disclose the duties properly, we may not.

We drove to Douglas a couple of weeks ago to do a little shopping and exploring.  On our way to Douglas, we took a small side trip to Ayers Natural Bridge park.  Many of the Oregon Trail settlers wrote about this unusual natural water feature  bridge while they were stopped here on their way west on the Oregon Trail including one man from the Donner party.   Many settlers stopped here to hide from Indian attacks and some actually lived in the caves nearby.

There is also an old power house near the bridge that was quite interesting to walk around.

We climbed one of the trails leading to the top of the natural bridge.  A little rough going and a little steep at times, but very short.  The view was worth the climb!

So, we would say we are getting into a routine, but we never know what we are doing from one week to the next.  

One thing we can say - we know it will not be a boring summer of the same ol' stuff.   As you may recall, we plan to work the holiday season at a Amazon.com processing center in Kansas starting in mid September.   Despite Amazon's 10 hour-days, they are starting to look pretty good.  We already have a good clue as to what to expect from Amazon's emails and we expect they will honor the contract as written with proper disclosure of duties and expectations.   They are organized and they communicate.

More Winter Traveling (Rapid City, SD)

After we left Plymouth, WA, we spent two weeks in Spokane visiting family.  Actually, Dan spent most of his time visiting his family and taking care of his parents while his sister took a long deserved vacation.

Sandy, in the meantime, stayed behind taking care of cats and trying to get them outside for some short walks.  She managed to get them out a couple of times on some decent days, but for most of the time in Spokane the weather was not the best for standing around waiting for a cat to move.  It was so cold and windy that the cats rejected going out or would not stay out for very long.

Sandy had plenty of time to work on her projects.  She finished six new Happy Campers and sold all of them in one day!  She wanted to thank all the people who shared her posts and showed an interest in her listings.  She hopes to have some new ones to list soon.

We left Spokane about a week ago.  Traveling through Montana and Wyoming turned into a challenge against wind, rain, hail, and snow.  We planned to make the trip in two days, but decided to make an unscheduled stop in Sheridan, WY to rest and visit with some old friends.  By the time we arrived in Rapid City, SD, we were both tired.  Even the cats showed no interest in going outside.  They spent the first couple of days sleeping in the bedroom...'just don't move the motorhome, okay?'..

In the first couple of days, we finished all our business with DMV, Military ID office, and shopping.  Time to be tourists and go see the sights.  Look!  Blue skies!  

We had a grand time walking around Mt. Rushmore and eating some of Thomas Jefferson's vanilla ice cream from his own recipe .  Quite tasty!  

On our way out of the parking lot, we got a nice surprise sighting of a family of mountain goats.  Mama, Papa and...

baby!  They seemed to be use to people being around them.  They were not skittish at all.

We spent another day driving the northern loop and going through Spearfish Canyon.  We drove through Deadwood, Lead, and Spearfish.  We had blue skies, but it was rather cold and the snow has not melted away.

Tomorrow, we drive to Glenrock, WY to start our new camp host jobs.  So, until next month...

Full-Timing For Five Years (Plymouth, WA)

We are in Plymouth, WA on the Columbia River for the next three days before moving on to Spokane.  Here's a photo of our new neighbor nesting in a tree directly above our RV.  She would like to invite one of our cats up for dinner, so we will be keeping an eye on our new neighbor.

So, for some catching up...March may have been a very wet month, but we managed to stay busy.

Next stop was to Nehalem Bay State Park for five days.  We found a nice site near the sand dunes with the beach on the other side.

After our 4-hour travel on windy and very bumpy roads, the cats were very insistent about getting outside. Once they had their leashes on, it was mayhem and cat-a-wallowing until the door opened.

They all spilled out and immediately - Hitch started climbing trees (it's a good thing he is on a retractable leash), Dusty cried while chewing on grass and the last two did a lot of exploring...in different directions, of course. It was like watching land-lovers getting off a boat, dropping to their knees and crying "land! We love you Land!"  Gee, it wasn't that bad of a travel day, but we could not get them to admit it.

We spent one day driving around the area.  We stopped at Wheeler to walk around their downtown area.  Their little train stop is quite cute.

 We spent most of our time around the state park.  We walked along the beach from the state park to Manzanita - a quaint and very interesting artist-filled town.  

We like this town so much that we went back a couple of weeks later.  The second time, we brought our son, Shaun with us and we ate at a nice little restaurant called Left Coast.

After five days, we moved back to Seaside.  We got a couple of sunny days during our stay. 

 Spring break has been going on between Washington and Oregon so the area has been very busy with families enjoying the beach.

The Seaside Resort is set in a wetland area.  The ducks and geese have been spending a lot of time in the area.  The cats have been alerting on a couple of Mallards as they waddled by our motorhome totally oblivious of the dangerous drooling cats in the windows.

Shaun drove down from the Seattle area during our last weekend in Seaside.  We tried to show him the beautiful coast of Oregon, but the weather wasn't cooperating so we took him to Astoria to show him some of the lovely old houses like the Flavel House and the Astoria Column.

Shaun's visit with us was short, but it was wonderful to see him one more time since we are not sure when we will be in this area again

Work and Travel Plans 2014

Dan has been busy lining up work for us.  He has the rest of this year all planned out.  We will visit family in Spokane in mid-April.  From there, we will head to South Dakota to renew our drivers licenses.  In May, we will be working as camp hosts in Glenrock, WY, in a small campground on a river that also does rental kayaks, tubing, and paddle boarding.  Not too bad of a job working 20 hours each with another couple and the owners.  That will last through September.

In mid September through 23 December, we have lined up a job with Amazon for seasonal work in their Kansas warehouse.  That will be a tough job with 4/10 hour days and later 5/10 hour days, and some potential voluntary 6/10 hour days if we want the additional overtime.  After we are finished with this last job, we will drive through Lawton Oklahoma for a quick visit with our daughter and grand daughters, before heading, hopefully, to a warmer and drier early new year winter stay somewhere in the south of Texas.

5 Years Of Full-Timing!

March marked our fifth year on the road.  Wow, we have seen so much and have met so many people in the last five years.  Sandy put together some simple collages to show where we have been and what we have experienced in our five years full time RV living.

Perfect Weather (Newport, OR)

We were happy to leave Florence, OR last week.  It rained almost the whole time we were there.  It rained so much that natural springs were popping up in the middle of the campground's dirt roads.  It would not be so bad if the campground had less dense growth and a better run-off system for the rain.  It just felt muddy and wet all the time.  The floors were a constant mess and hard to keep up with them.  They are clearing timber in the park to open it up, so it may be better by next year.

 Whenever it would stop raining, we would rush outside to get in some walks.  We spent most of our time in or around the RV park.  We weren't very enthused with getting out in the wind and rain along the coastal areas with cliffs.

We are a lot happier in our new site in Newport.  We have had more sunshine and the roads are not as muddy in the campground.  The cats are certainly a lot happier.  They are not tracking in as much debris and the floors are staying a lot cleaner.

We had to go see the sea lions in Newport's Historic Bayfront area.  There were not as many as last fall and they were not very active, but they were still fun to see again.

 We also went back to Yaquina Head Lighthouse.  As you can see, the weather was absolutely gorgeous!  We walked up Communications hill to get a different view of the lighthouse and found it was a great place to view the surrounding area as well.

 We could see for miles up and down the coast and not a single rain cloud within our view.

On another nice day, we went to Nye Beach.  We walked along the beach and then into the downtown area stopping along the way to view menus.  Some of them sounded pretty good.  Guess we will have to go back to try some of them.  We could not pass up a pastry shop though, so Dan got a big cookie and Sandy decided on a strawberry with lavender scone.

There's some interesting art work around the downtown area.  This one had our attention for a while.

We are not quite sure what it means, but it was well done with plenty of details.  The more we looked at the more we saw we missed on our first time around it.

Our only complaint with our campsite in Newport is the slow or non-existent WiFi.  In order to get online, we have to spend time in the family center or constantly reboot our own broadband connection.  

Well, by the time we post again, we will be a little farther north.  So until then...Happy Trails!
